Detroit Blues Society To Host 2nd Annual Detroit Youth Blues Challenge

The Detroit Blues Society is announcing that due to the overwhelming success of this year's event, that it will be staging the 2nd Annual Detroit Youth Blues Challenge. It will be held in October of 2010 at Callahan’s Music Hall in Auburn Hills, Detroit’s premier Blues club. The Detroit Blues Society is currently accepting pre-applications for this event based upon the following criteria:

THE RULES:

1) You must play Blues-based music. Rock Blues is permissible.
(ie: Joe Bonamassa, John Mayer, Walter Trout, Tinsley Ellis style)

2) You are allowed to play one (1) Blues cover tune without penalty.

3) Original material will be scored higher than covers.

4) You
must play two (2) Traditional Style 12-bar Blues tunes. (download examples below)
The remaining tunes are freestyle.

5) All musicians must be
under 21 years of age at the time of the IBC's in Memphis (January 2011).

6) Only bands acts are welcome.

7) Approved entrance is by audition (live or recorded) only!

The Detroit Blues Society team will pick, from all qualified applicants, the final 6 acts from the pre-applicants to compete in the actual event at Callahan’s. The event competitors will be judged by an all-star panel of Detroit Blues dignitaries in 6 categories of criteria.

The overall, declared winner of the main event will go to Memphis, Tennessee on January 2011 to play at the
27th International Blues Challenge Youth Showcase, on Beale Street. This event will feature a worldwide cast of talented young people showcasing their Blues talents for record labels, media, festivals, managers, talent buyers and the fans.

This event is being staged to discover, encourage, mentor, and showcase the “next generation” of Detroit Blues Artists, while teaching today’s youth the importance and value of historic American Roots music.
