Board / Committee Chair Roles and Responsibilities

General Board Member / Committee Chair Guidelines
• Maintain DBS membership in good standing.
• Support and adhere to the Society’s by-laws.
• Support and adhere to Board policies.
• Attend all Board meetings.
• Project a positive image to the blues community.
• Accept assignments in support of Society goals.
• Attend Society functions.

Board Chair
• Preside at all Board Meetings.
• Conduct Board Meetings.
• Prepare agendas and provide to Board Members.
• Meet with officers and representatives of other organizations.
• Perform other administrative and Society related tasks.
• Develop new alliances and long-range plans.

President
• Function as the chief executive of the Detroit Blues Society.
• Preside at all Membership Meetings.
• Perform duties of the Chairperson of the Board in the event of absence.
• Cosign contracts, certificates, receipts, checks, etc.
• Meet with officers and representatives of other organizations.
• Perform other administrative and Society related tasks, as assigned.
• Develop new alliances and long-range plans.

Vice President
• Assist the President with correspondence and communication in matters related to operations, as assigned.
• Attend all monthly Board meetings.
• Attend as many Membership meetings and events as schedule will allow.
• Represent and act in behalf of the President in their absence.
• Assist with the ordering and receiving of Society merchandise.
• Serve on Committees as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Treasurer
• Handle all day-to-day financial activities.
• Prepare monthly/annual financial statements.
• Attend all monthly Board meetings.
• Attend as many Membership meetings and events as schedule will allow.
• Assist with the ordering and receiving of Society merchandise.
• Volunteer to sell Society merchandise and memberships at local blues festivals and performances.
• Ensure non-profit status documentation remains current with the State of Michigan.
• Serve on Committees as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

Secretary
• Handle all day-to-day communication activities.
• Prepare monthly meeting minutes statements.
• Keeper of all records.
• Attend all monthly Board meetings.
• Attend as many Membership meetings and events as schedule will allow.
• Volunteer to sell Society merchandise and memberships at local blues festivals and performances.
• Serve on Committees as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

At-Large Board Members
• Participate with other Board Members in administering the Detroit Blues Society’s business.
• Provide constructive feedback on the various inputs of members.
• Participate in the decision making in the best interests of the Detroit Blues Society.
• Serve on Committees as assigned.
• Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.
• Promote and actively support the goals and objectives of the Detroit Blues Society.

Volunteer Chair
• Develop written plan of action for all events and submit to Board for approval.
• Attend and oversee/appoint captain for all DBS events with volunteers.
• Recruit and Coordinate volunteers for all events.

Special Events/Awards Chair
• Develop written plan of action for all events and submit to Board for approval.
• Coordinate and recommend all potential award recipients.
• Attend and oversee/appoint captain for all DBS events with volunteers.

Marketing/Publicity Chair
• Develop written plan of action for PR/marketing and submit to Board for approval.
• Create and distribute Press Releases and news items pertaining to DBS activities.
• Seek new partnership opportunities to broaden reach of the DBS.
• Create and distribute posters for events.

Monthly Meeting/Jam Chair
• Develop written plan of action for all events and submit to Board for approval.
• Attend and oversee/appoint captain for all DBS Meeting/Jam events.
• Secure bands, venues, and funding for all events.

Blues Challenge Chair
• Develop written plan of action for all events and submit to Board for approval.
• Attend and oversee/appoint captain for all events.
• Recruit and Coordinate Judges for all events.
• Secure bands, venues, and funding for all events.
• Obtain prizes, sponsors, and incentives for events.

Website Chair
• Develop written plan of action / updates and submit to Board for approval.
• Coordinate development and administrate website, Myspace, and Facebook/Twitter sites.
• Coordinate e-commerce action plan.
• Seek new partnership opportunities to broaden reach of the DBS.

Newsletter Chair
• Develop written plan of action / updates and submit to Board for approval.
• Coordinate advertising sales in Bluesnotes.
• Coordinate layout and printing of Bluesnotes.
• Coordinate distribution of Bluesnotes.

Blues in Schools / Blues Education Chair
• Develop written plan of action / updates and submit to Board for approval.
• Seek opportunities to showcase Blues.
• Seek new partnership opportunities to broaden reach of the DBS.
• Develop sources for funding.

Membership Chair
• Develop written plan of action / updates and submit to Board for approval.
• Set up and run membership table at all DBS events.
• Send out renewal reminders to current members.
• Develop new ways to increase membership.

Merchandise Chair
• Develop written plan of action / updates and submit to Board for approval.
• Set up and run membership table at all DBS events.
• Secure (with Volunteer Chair) support for events.
• Inventory control and ordering.
• Mailing of Internet purchased items.
